William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) was an English playwright and poet who drafted 154 sonnets, several poems and 38 plays. He lived in the Elizabethan Era of England, the epoch of Queen Elizabeth I’s reign (1588-1603). “Macbeth” is one of Shakespeare’s most famous works and was written in 1606. It describes the rise to power of Macbeth from a royal military leader to the king of Scotland, his transformation into a tyrant and his fall.
Generally, one can say that the social, political and economic conditions of the Elizabethan age are reflected in many scenes of the play “Macbeth”.
The Elizabethan worldview consisted of, among others, the “great chain of being”, a form of a hierarchy given by god in which people strongly believed in.
