Leaving everything behind that belonged to their lives in Mexico, Candido and wife América pursue to start a new and better life in the United States. It seems as if obstacles constantly get thrown in their way to prevent them from obtaining the American Dream.
The novel mentions that the Mexican couple had previously attempted to cross the border to America but were caught and sent back. On one hand, coming back again seems naïve, on the other it is truly courageous and shows their desire to fulfil the American Dream. Only a few days after Candido gets hit by a car, leaving him badly injured and their camp gets ravaged he gets up, moves their camp to a safer place and finds work.
Neither Candido nor América have the intention to act criminally or harm anyone. Their goal is to live an acceptable life as a family in the United States – a country of which the population is made up by immigrants.....
