The picture shows an advertisement for “Pears’ soap” which is a British brand of soap and was published in the 1890s. This advertisement shows how important the themes of colonialism, civilization and the idea of the White Man's Burden had been at this time. They even influenced the advertising of an everyday product.
In the centre of the picture you can see man with white hair and a white mustachio who is wearing a white suite with epaulettes. He is in a bathroom standing in front of a wash basin and it seems like he is washing his hands. Ahead of him there is a round window which probably is a bullseye. ...
