T. Coraghessan Boyle’s ”The Tortilla Curtain” (1996) portrays the Mexican couple, Cándido and América, who have immigrated to Topanga Canyon, Los Angeles. They live here in hiding as illegal immigrants. Cándido has been run over by a car and he is therefore unable to work. As a result, the pregnant América decides to go look for a job which is very much against Cándido’s will. Cándido does not think that there are any jobs for women here and he tries to stop her from going.
In spite of their difficult situation, América still dreams of the material goods that Cándido promised her would come with a life in the US: a house with a gas range, refrigerator, and maybe even a yard.
